Meet Bloomfield Hills resident and author MernaLyn. With an eclectic and fascinating life, she has enjoyed a successful international modeling and acting career that resulted in assignments all over the globe.
“I feel very fortunate,” MernaLyn says. “I have worked very hard, and my career has allowed me to do so many interesting things. For instance, I was Miss Budweiser for the Anheuser Busch Paul Newman Racing Team and was in the most publicized sports photo of the year. That job was only supposed to last a few months, but it turned into a few years.
“I had a recurring role in the ABC sitcom Sledgehammer and performed Shakespeare at the renowned Globe Theatre when I was living in the U.K.”
After years of living in places like Beverly Hills, Calif., and New York City, MernaLyn moved back to the Detroit area. Since then, she’s become an award-winning author and speaker. Now known as the “Diet Diva,” MernaLyn wrote a book, The 10- Second Diet, which details her unique approach to healthy living.
What is the 10-Second Diet?
It’s the easiest, fastest, safest diet you will ever have. It’s a new approach to the age-old problem of dieting that works without special foods, pills, potions, elixirs or liquids. You can master this technique in less time than it takes to read the cover of the book! It is so easy to follow and the effects are felt instantly and immediately.
What was your inspiration to write this book?
In our society, the word “diet” has become another bad four-letter word. In order to become truly healthy, you’ll have to change more than just your food choices. You’ll have to change the way you live your life as well. My approach is that it takes only 10 seconds to change your train of thought. When you do that, your goals will come into focus, and you’ll be on your way toward attaining your personal self-fulfillment.
What do you hope people will achieve after reading your book?
I’d like people to start putting the human back into humanity.
A healthier lifestyle isn’t about the way you look; it’s about what you do with your life. You only get one body, so you have to do the best you can with it. You need to develop who you really are and who you want to be and find a better and kinder way to live. It is important not only what you put into your body, but what you put out into the world. By developing yourself as a human being, you will develop a stronger compassion toward others and toward life itself.
Can you give an example of a type of change one could make that will affect life in a positive way?
Eat less and move more. The 10-Second Diet brings all of your senses into the 10 seconds you’re living right now. I call that “mindsight,” and it’s a time for one to stop and think before they speak, act, move and eat.
What is the most exciting thing to happen to you as a result of The 10-Second Diet?
First Lady Michelle Obama actually uses parts of the book for her Let’s Move! initiative to combat childhood obesity. I received an incredible letter from her director of policy that called the book self-empowering for youngsters and said that it gives them the motivation and inspiration to attain their goals for a healthy weight and lifestyle.
What are some of your favorite activities around town?
I love to walk around and explore the local communities. I walk at least 5 miles or more a day, even in the dead of winter. I’m a member of the DSO and a patron of the arts. I love going to sporting events, too. Baseball is my favorite, and even though I’ve been a diehard Yankees fan all my life, I do like to see our Detroit Tigers play at Comerica Park.
Finally, what is your full, actual name?
My legal name is MernaLyn. That’s what it says on my driver’s license, passport and other documents. Sometimes a legal one-word name can cause a problem with computers, but eventually and with enough tenacity, they finally get it right. At least it’s memorable! NS
MernaLyn will be at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, to talk about her book, The 10-Second Diet.
