Here is a list of my j’adore-approved favorite places to shop in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market and the neighborhood I call home.

The Clothing

Henry the Hatter

Henry the Hatter may be a newbie to the market, but it’s a longtime staple to Detroit. Detroit’s exclusive hatter since 1893, it’ss the oldest hat retailer in the U.S. Be sure to stop by this store to shop for the most stylish and swanky hats around.

Savvy Chic

2712 Riopelle St., Detroit

It has been 16 years since Savvy Chic broke the mold by opening a lifestyle and fashion boutique on Riopelle Street. The boutique has a unique Parisian flare with one-of-a kind fashions and shoes for both men and women. This is also the perfect shop for gifts, featuring French linens, gourmet foods, candles and greeting cards.

Well Done Goods

1440 Gratiot Ave., Detroit

This store functions as the flagship store of Detroit-based Cyberoptix ties and offers an eclectic collection of city-focused knickknacks and clothing. From paying respect to the city’s techno roots, to celebrating creative independent artists, this is a one-stop-shop for all the funky fun finds you didn’t know you needed.

Orleans + Winder

Orleans + Winder is a j’adore favorite that offers pieces that easily transition from day to evening. This store offers a gallery-type shopping experience with curated pieces that move away from mass production.

SMPLFD

1480 Gratiot Ave., Detroit

Detroit creativity meets streetwear at this Gratiot Avenue design house. SMPLFD focuses on the sale of hip-hop inspired clothing, vintage resale and collaborations with local artists that help promote and cultivate the diverse talents of Detroiters. The Summer 18’ line is definitely bringing the hot street style.

Detroit Hustles Harder

This Division Street clothing boutique shines a spotlight on Detroit’s emerging artists by bringing their vision to the marketplace. The company has recently collaborated with Detroit-based artist Ouzi and Murals in the Market.

Signal – Return

1345 Division St., suite 102, Detroit

Signal – Return is a community letterpress printing shop that invites everyone to become immersed in the creative expression and craftsmanship of the printing press. The studio functions as an educational center for arts and storefront that sells prints, posters, cards and gift items.

Detroit Vs. Everybody

The homegrown label Detroit Vs. Everybody was launched with the idea of revolting against the media’s continuous bashing of Detroit. The brand cultivated the idea that it could rebuild the image of Detroit through the perseverance of the people native to the city. The Versus Everybody brand now provides a strong message for any city, person or sports team that wants to unapologetically showcase its spirit and determination against haters.

Boro Resale

Affordable and vintage aren’t two words you would typically say together, but thankfully for Boro Resale, it’s possible. This store makes it easy for shoppers to showcase their personal style without breaking the bank. The items are previously loved and tagged with a handwritten note about the clothing’s story.

The Food

Beau Bien Fine Foods

2478 Riopelle St., Detroit

Beau Bien Fine Foods’ name pays homage to the city, offering well-made foods manufactured in Detroit. The preserve and condiment company has been open since 2010, but just recently opened its first tasting room in Eastern Market. Stop in to sample a seasonal preserve or order one of their globally influenced baked foods, snacks or lunch items.

Germack

Germack Pistachio Company is the oldest roaster of pistachio nuts in the U.S. This Detroit classic store offers a full line of house roasted nuts, seeds and coffees. This is a great place to enjoy an in-house roasted coffee or my personal favorite, the turmeric latte.

Devries & Co.

2468 Market St., Detroit

Don’t let the floor shine fool you, Devries & Co. has been providing the finest cheese and specialty foods since 1893. The market shop continues its 125-year legacy of providing Detroit with the highest quality cheese, eggs and butter around. From the recycled Detroit Axle plant lighting to the counters built from 1904 lumber, everything in this shop pulsates with the city’s rich history.

Milano Bakery

Whether you are stopping in for lunch or you are looking to cater your next event, Milano Bakery has it covered. This bakery has been a market classic since 1975, offering fresh breads, delicious desserts and lunch specials.

Home Goods and Housewares

Detroit Mercantile Co.

Detroit Mercantile Co. is rich with Detroit history and holds true to the mercantile and general store type setting. You can find everything here from clothing classics Carhartt and Stormy Kromer, to artisan lotions or blacksmith gardening tools. This store covers all the bases and is the perfect place to buy a gift made with love in Detroit.

Detroit Wick

This is not your average candle company. Detroit Wick offers on-site production and manufacturing in full view of store visitors. This store functions as an interactive space and curated boutique that specializes in scent branding.

Eastern Market Antiques

2530 Market St., Detroit

No trip to Eastern Market is complete without stopping in Eastern Market Antiques. This retailer specializes in furniture, lighting, retro and much more. You never know what unique pieces you will find at this vintage store.

Floyd

This Division Street furniture store is focused on designing affordable furniture that is built to last. If the daunting task of putting together another piece of Ikea furniture is enough to make your brain rattle, this is surely the furniture store for you. Floyd home goods are easy to construct and made for longevity. The store even features a timed table building station that challenges customers to put one together in less than three minutes.
