Karen Dybis

Karen Dybis is the ultimate “Pure Michigan” fan — she grew up in the Thumb, has lived everywhere from Kalamazoo to Royal Oak to Mackinac Island, and is a Detroit history nut. She grew up in Bad Axe, moved to Romeo and graduated from the University of Michigan. From there, Karen covered retail for The Oakland Press and The Detroit News, and that experience sparked a lifelong interest in why we shop and why we buy the things that we do. Since becoming a freelance writer in 2005, Karen has worked for blogs, newspapers and magazines. She also is the author of four local history books, including the ultimate potato-chip history (“Better Made in Michigan,”) a tourist guide to the strange places in the Motor City (“Secret Detroit”) and a true-crime mystery set in the 1930s (“The Witch of Delray”).
