With the rise of Pinterest, Etsy, Instagram and bloggers, creating a menu for your wedding, anniversary party or charity ball is no easy task. Today’s partygoer expects more than the traditional banquet food of years past, and hosts want to create a unique experience for their guests that is reflected in everything from the invitation, decor and flowers, down to the food they serve.

Event experts Lizz Smith and Joanie Sams from the Townsend Hotel know some fun food presentations (that do not include chicken piccata) to provide inspiration for your next event. With 60 years of combined experience, this duo has experience planning events for thousands, such as events at the Red Bull Races and Ryder Cup, intimate family gatherings, and elaborate weddings and corporate meetings.

“We start with an initial meeting to get to know the couple or host to determine what is going to be special about their event,” Lizz said. “What message do they want to convey? What ‘flair’ can show off their personality or theme?”

From there, she said it is their job to map out a plan that is attainable and within budget.

Looking for ideas for your next event? Here are three fun food presentations from Lizz:

Little Italy

Love all things Italian? Start with Limoncello martinis during cocktail hour. Create an elegant anti-pasta spread. Include a “make-your-own” pasta station with various noodles, sauces and toppings. Guests can go home with a wrapped box of cannoli, and everyone will be dreaming about Rome.

The Ultimate Foodies Brunch

Lizz and Joanie recently did a brunch for self-proclaimed foodies and incorporated their favorite foods. “We created items like Nutella bruschetta with fresh berry and mint, our own version of chicken and waffles, popcorn chicken in house-made waffle cones drizzled with sage syrup, and Banana Cream Pie shooters. The groom was in heaven,” Lizz said.

Comfort Food with a Twist

A fancy event doesn’t have to call for fancy food, Lizz says. Try dressing up your favorite comfort foods into items like truffle fries, macaroni and gruyere cheese, mini cinnamon buns or milk and cookies served on silver trays. These popular foods are sure to be a crowd pleaser.
